Why Minor in Spanish-Language Journalism?

With the Latino population growing, there is a rising demand for reporting accurately on Spanish-speaking and Latino communities. By minoring in Spanish-language journalism, you will be able to fill this gap. Your reporting will share factual, ethical stories about Latino communities with the wider world. Through your classes, you will better understand Latino media, history, language, and culture.

Interdisciplinary Minor

Good reporting requires understanding the community you are serving. You will take classes from four CSUN departments for proper context and history. You will take classes in journalism, Chicana/o studies, Central American studies and Spanish. Be confident in a variety of skills—from reporting to speaking to research.

Journalism that Matters

CSUN's Journalism program stands out for its focus on community journalism. You'll learn how to highlight local and underserved groups to ensure that news stories are diverse and inclusive. You can take courses on gender and diversity in media. We teach Spanish-language media skills and support on-campus news organizations that report in English and Spanish.

Student Media

There are a variety of ways to grow your skills as a journalism student at CSUN. The Department of Journalism supports seven award-winning, student-led digital news media operations that publish and produce news in English and Spanish. It also supports a student-operated public relations firm. You will be able to actively use and grow your skills as well as find the field that best fits you.

What You'll Learn

As a Spanish-Language Journalism minor, you'll learn journalism skills and cultural knowledge. In your lower-division core courses, you will take introductory reporting classes. You will also take intermediate Spanish classes to gain language skills.

Your upper-division core courses deal with Latino and Spanish-language journalism:

  • Spanish-language news environment (conducted in English)
  • Spanish-language media writing (conducted in Spanish).
