On the way to Mount Rushmore from Hill City we were fascinated by the beauty of the black hills There really are hills or better mountains - we are again above 5,000 feet - and they are solid with forests, hence black from a distance. Not much sign of bark beetle damage here. Very pretty. We loved this little lake. Even I could have been persuaded to camp here.
Also,as you can see, there are serious rocks here and
if you look carefully - what do you see in the picture below? |
Mount Rushmore The Mount Rushmore monument is certainly very impressive, but I actually really, really like rocks and I am not so sure how much I like rocks that have been "embellished". Obviously a matter of taste. Below, Mount Rushmore with unknown civilians
Below the four gentlemen - for you who are a little weak on history: from left: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson; Teddy Rosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. For Nick who was worried: All four were properly barbered. and finally with another - perhaps known civilian:
Behind the civilian the gateway to the memorial with the flags of the fifty states. The architecture of the memorial is rather gargantuan, Albert Speer would be proud. I assume it is to keep it in appropriate scale with the rock. Having visited Rushmore we had to also go to the Crazy Horse Memorial |
