Geography 490

Research Paper - First Draft

Senior Seminar In Geography

Students hate doing multiple drafts of any piece of writing, but doing so remains an essential component of the research and composition process.

Under Construction

The first draft should be constructed using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, or some other word processor and submitted electronically to your instructor. Do not submit .pdf files because they make the provision of feedback difficult. The final draft of the paper may be submitted as .pdf file.

The first draft should contain all the components of the final draft.

Your instructor will read the first draft and return it to you with suggestions regarding the content, style and presentation. Students are expected to address those concerns wherever possible.

To help get you started, a template has been created that will help you begin writing. You only need to fill in the 15 to 20 pages of text that are missing!

The link below will prompt you to download a Microsoft Word document that you can use to build your paper. It already has a "blank" title page, table of contents, list of figures, bibliography section, etc., plus some helpful tips for writing the paper in the correct style. You may build yours from scratch if you would like. You may also use one of the templates offered by Microsoft, or whatever word processing software you prefer.

Research Papers from Previous Semesters.

The map library in Sierra Hall has a collection of 490 papers from previous semesters available for your inspection. You may visit the library and peruse these papers to get some indication of what constitutes at the very least a passing paper. Of course you may find outstanding examples in this collection as well.

If you are familiar with the Geography Department's data server structure, you also may search through electronic copies of papers submitted in more recent semesters. They can be found and the GEOGSERVER2 in the 490 directory on the Y drive.
