McD is on a point of land in Seal Cove and faces to west. The site is fairly protected by a number of the islands to the west but does receive quite a bit of ice scour. Ice floes during the winters of 2002 and 2003 deposited sediment and rock throughout the site. Ice dropped a granite block roughly 1 m x 1.5 m x 2 m on top of the 2 meter plot during the winter of 2003. The intertidal zone is mostly rocky granite ledges with the ledges forming islands in between mud and sand patches. Ascophyllum is common while mussels and barnacles are rare.
Picture above : Looking to the northwest with islands and Casco Passage in the distance. The closest islands appear as one but are Hen Island with Buckle Island just behind Hen. On the horizon is Opechee Island. The boulder in the foreground and on the left is approximately 1 cubic meter and was transported by ice onto the shore during the winter of 2003-2004. The boulder sits right in the middle of the 2 m clearing. Granite ledges in the foreground and just beyond were covered by Ascophyllum but were scoured clean during the winter of 2003-2004. Photo was taken on 7 May 2004.
