Mentoring Undergraduate Students

7. PUMP Seminar, Fall 2007. I organized through the MCTP-NSF grant a two-hours weekly seminar for  ten undergraduate students (juniors and seniors). The student conducted a ``research-type" work about the convergence of infinite series. This work was performed individually and in small groups (two or three students). Each wrote a ten pages paper in Latex to report their findings. Each of the ten students received a stipend of $960 at the end of this seminar.

6. PUMP Summer Research Institutes (June 4 -- July 13, 2007). I have organized two summer institutes for undergraduate students. The first institute was implemented for 15 Freshman students (10 from CSUN students, 2 from Pierce College, and 3 from high School).  This institute was supported by the MCTP-NSF grant. The main objective of this institute is to give the students the opportunity to learn mathematics through discovery in groups and as individuals. The students were exposed to various issues ranging from mathematical modeling, solving problems with MATLAB package software, and reporting their results in papers using Latex, a typesetting program for scientific papers. The program of this institute was implemented by Professor M. R. D'orsogna (CSUN) and graduate students P. Ryan. and J. Foss. Each student received $2,000 after completing this institute. The second institute was organized for Junior and Senior students. 17 students CSUN students were selected to attend a five-week program about ``wavelets" and their applications with a special emphasis on the mathematical analysis. Each students wrote a ten-pages ``research" paper in Latex. The program of this institute was implemented by Professor A. Zakeri (CSUN) and graduate students K. Di Passero. Each students received $2,000 after completing this institute.

5. PUMP Winter Institute (January 16 -- January 26, 2007). 11 undergraduate students (all Senior) maths major, were selected  to participate in a two-week winter institute co-organized  with Professor Helena Noronha. This institute was supported by the MCTP-NSF grant. The main objective of this institute is to give the students the opportunity to learn more mathematics by working in groups and as individuals.

4. PUMP  Summer Research Institute (June 19 -- July 22, 2006). 1 undergraduate students (all Freshman), were selected from CSUN, to participate in a five-week summer institute, I organized in collaboration with Professor Poleswczak. Each student received $2,500 after completing this institute.

 3. PUMP Seminar, Spring 2006. With my colleague Professor Alberto Candel, I organized through the MCTP-NSF grant a weekly seminar for 10 undergraduate students (juniors and seniors). Each student had the responsibility to present  a topic from the book ``Fourier analysis on finite groups and applications, {by Audrey Terras (1999)". At the end of this seminar, the students had to take an assessment test. Each student had to pick up (randomly) a topic. Then, he/she had four hours to prepare his/her presentation in the university library. Once the time was expired, he/she had to (a) present the prepared work in twenty minutes, (b) prove the presented results in twenty minutes, and (c) answer the questions of the jury during twenty minutes. Each of the ten students received a stipend of $1,500 at the end of this seminar.

 2. PUMP Summer Research Institute (June 13--July 15, 2005). 17 undergraduate students (all Freshman), were selected from CSUN and community colleges in the area, to participate in a five-week summer institute, I organized in collaboration with Professor Poleswczak. This institute was supported by the MCTP-NSF grant. The main objective of this institute was to give the students the opportunity to learn mathematics through discovery in groups and as individuals. The students were exposed to various issues ranging from mathematical modeling, solving problems with MATLAB package software, and reporting their results in papers using Latex, a typesetting program for scientific papers. Each student received $2,500 after completing this institute.

1. PUMP Seminar, Fall 2005. I organized through the MCTP-NSF grant a weekly seminar for eight undergraduate students ({\it juniors} and {\it seniors}). The students had the responsibility of presenting concepts, proofs, and answer questions at the black board in a limited time ($20$ minutes for each part). The main objective of this one hour and $30$ minutes weekly seminar was to complement courses, expand students' mathematical horizons, and make them learn how to find key points and central ideas. Each of the eight students received a stipend of $1,500 at the end of this seminar.
