Teaching and Advising

I use a learning-centered approach and best practices from the Quality Learning and Teaching Framework. My tools range from low-tech (chalkboard) to high-tech (remote sensing, ArcGIS Online). My courses include lecture, seminar, lab, and field studies.

Geographer's Craft

Geography 300. This is research design for geographers. How to plan a science-based research project. Physical/Natural science and Social science approaches. Selecting Quantitative and Qualitative methods appropriate for extensive and intensive research designs.

Geography of Oceania

Geography 334. An expansive and in-depth look at development and change in Oceania by integrating weather/climate, biogeography, gender, colonialism, and western/indigenous economies.

Field Studies

Geography 404. Fieldwork-based learning, focused on mobile geospatial equipment and the intersection of people and the environment. Local field trips to National Park Service sites, L.A. County Arboretum, Port of L.A.

International field trip to Vanuatu is offerd during Spring Break for qualified students.

Senior Thesis

Geography 490. Together in class, seniors work on independent thesis projects.  Culminating experience where undergraduates demonstrate skills as professional researchers.

Environment, Economy, and Development

Geography 375. This course integrates the economic geography approach of diverse economies with the environmental geography approach of political ecology to investigate questions such as "why do we feel faced with a choice between the economy and the environment? And what have communities around the world been doing to support both environmental and human well-being?"

Mixed Methods for Human and Environmental Geography

Geography 449. This course provides training in a selection of qualitative and quantitative methods. This is useful for research into human dimensions of space, place, and landscape; the human-environment interface; and socio-ecological processes.
