David Miller’s Corvette Chronicles

Plan ‘B’

Okay, so I’d been bitten by the sports car bug and bitten hard.  I was very excited about the prospect of entering this hobby but was still uncertain of just which path to take.  Clearly, I did not have the resources to either acquire or maintain anything remotely “exotic”.  Desperate to find a suitable path into the hobby, I began perusing online car classified ads.  I had to find something that was comparatively inexpensive to purchase—and had to be new enough to purchase on time payments if the price was more than a few thousand dollars—and carried a much lower maintenance toll.  So what could fulfill all of those criteria while still having the power, handling and aesthetics of a true sports car?

Within two days, I had solved the riddle.  The solution was a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.  It was black-on-black, had 21,000 miles on it and cost just a little more than the Honda Accord EX V6 sedan that I have as my “everyday car”.  As for maintenance?  Well, there’s the very low mileage; and, it’s Chevy, not a Ferrari.

A C5 Z06 was the correct way to go, although I might have benefited by shopping around a little more.  I have had to deal with a few frustrations, but overall I am quite satisfied with this car’s ability to satisfy my sports car cravings for a long time to come.  Look elsewhere in these Chronicles for discussion on the things I’ve worked on to correct some shortcomings of this particular car and the bad as well as good experiences I continue to have in my development as a sports car driver and owner.
