This inspiring morning is suitable for faculty members in all fields who want to publish in top journals. Sargent has streamlined the writing and publishing process so authors learn to craft tighter prose in much less time. These methods significantly improve the ability to write during teaching semesters. We focus on secrets to understanding the needs and interests of top-tier journals, especially how to gain editor interest and advice much earlier in the writing process. Friday, May 11, 1:00-3:30: Publishing Books at the Best University Presses

Many of the same topics in the morning session are expanded here for the particular needs of faculty members writing books. The first section is an overview with new information that's important for everyone from new, beginning assistant professor all the way to the accomplished scholar seeking the rank of full professor. Then we break down the publishing process into two areas. The first covers traditional academic monographs and key issues for turning a dissertation into a book. The second addresses advanced questions such as how to change topics in scholarly publishing, the relationship between conferences and publishing, how to be strategic about citations and peer reviewers so that your book has a warm scholarly reception, and how to calibrate your research output to the larger goals of your campus in national and global rankings.
