Event Description: In this country, African people have been historically enslaved and have faced a series of discriminatory and repressive laws that have created a long-standing racial system of injustice. Asian Pacific Islander Desi Americans have similarly been a scapegoat and have faced issues of language exclusion, exclusionary immigration laws, the model minority myth, and have most recently been the target of an uptick in anti-Asian violence. The Africana-Asian diaspora is a story of displacement and shared trauma at the hands of colonialism, neoliberalism, and white supremacy. Our communities have long been purposely pitted against one another at the expense of stealing our joy and humanity. This Research and Community Highlight Event consists of a panel of academics and community organizers who will discuss the necessity of Black-APIDA solidarity and civic engagement, the work each of them is involved with, solidarity with and beyond their communities, and the ways we can help ensure our collective liberation.
