Purpose:  Launched in 2019, the Sustainability Champions program is an initiative to engage and empower CSUN employees to expand sustainability knowledge and practices within their areas of influence. This network of sustainability communicators and practitioners fosters a culture of environmental and social stewardship, to have representation in every department across the campus. Sustainability Champions serve as an informational resource to others in their department and help identify opportunities to integrate sustainability into everyday operations.

Fall 2024 Workshop Series

What is the role of a Sustainability Champion?

  • Share information from the Sustainability Program and affiliated CSUN sources including flyers, announcements, and social media posts
  • Share sustainability-related awards, scholarships, involvement opportunities, etc. with students
  • Volunteer at sustainability-related events
  • Promote and recruit Sustainability Champions
  • Attend at least two workshops per year, with topics ranging from Energy, Water, Waste, Transportation, Purchasing, and others
  • Learn and implement best practices to advance sustainability-related projects and work
  • Policy and project developments to share with departments
  • Provide feedback on sustainability-related programs and initiatives
  • Assist with collecting data necessary for sustainability assessment and reporting
  • Participation in sustainability programs and initiatives
  • If desired, partner with CSUN Sustainability and other units to implement sustainability projects and programs within departments and across the university

Who can be a Sustainability Champion?
Sustainability Champions should be employees or student employees of CSUN or its Auxiliaries. One Champion per campus department is ideal, however, larger departments can designate more than one if desired. Academic Colleges may specify a collegewide Champion in addition to those at the department level. Sustainability Champions do not need related professional responsibilities (i.e., sustainability-related work in a position description), but should have a strong personal interest in sustainability.

Why be a Sustainability Champion?

  • Be a part of a fun, engaged ground within the CSUN Community
  • Contribute to the culture of sustainability and progress toward carbon neutrality, zero waste, and other CSUN Sustainability goals
  • Priority notification for sustainability-related funding, projects, and programs
  • Share department projects and accomplishments
  • Awards and recognition for university service
  • Department and Champion name listed on the CSUN Sustainability website
