Stretch Math

What

Prior to the issuance of Executive Order 1110, Developmental Math and the Department of Mathematics developed preparatory classes tailored to “Math Ideas” and Statistics for students who come in at a ESM level of 34-49 (either through the ELM or through Early Start Math). The goal was to better prepare students in Social Sciences, Arts, and the Humanities for General Education math courses while earning Baccalaureate credit.

The process was complicated by EO 1110, but Math 196QR was launched in Spring 2018, and Early Start Math 196QR was offered in Summer 2018. A variant, serving the same purpose, was developed for STEM students and approved by Math Department and College of Science and Math Curriculum Committees.  

Both Math 196QR and 196S employ a pedagogy called Active Learning (see Resources below for more information).

When

Math 196QR was launched in Spring 2018 and Early Start Math 196QR was launched in Summer 2018. Math 196S was launched in Fall 2018 after a prototype ran in Summer 2018 as Early Start Math 099.

Outcomes

Evaluation and comparison to developmental math will be done throughout the 2018-19 Academic Year
