11th Annual We Are Power: Community In Action Conference (previously Diversity Day)

February 29, 2020

CARCERALITY RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME (C. R. E. A. M.)

Our theme this year is Carcerality Rules Everything Around Me (C.R.E.A.M.): Understanding Forms of Carcerality & Rebuilding Relationships. Our goal is to bring awareness to the community surrounding the topic of Carcerality, the ways in which our environment is set up to detain, contain, punish, and incarcerate people and communities. We will critically examine how carcerality shows up in various sites including prisons, detention centers, the foster care system, mental health institutions, identity, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation, education and more. Additionally, we hope to build community and justice through learning strategies to help repair and rebuild relationships, while humanizing those who have experienced any form of carcerality.

We will feature a panel on prison abolition and carcerality in higher education, a theatre performance from Meta Theatre Company, poetry by Tia Chucha’s Trauma to Transformation group, and breakouts focusing on Restorative Justice practices. We have a community resource fair with organizations like:

Af3irm Los Angeles, Dignity And Power, National Association Of Social Workers (NASW), Homeboy Industries, Painted Brain, Stop LAPD Spying Coalition,
Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore, and ReformLAJails.
