What it Means to be Moral: A Richard Smith Lecture Event FlyerThe CSUN College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Richard Smith Lecture in Cultural Studies is please to welcome Phil Zuckerman Ph.D. a sociologist and professor of sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. He specializes in the sociology of substantial secularity and is the author of several books, including "What It Means to be Moral: Why Religion Is Not Necessary for Living an Ethical Life" (2019).

According to the Pew Research Center, 2024, "Today, about 28% of U.S. adults are religiously unaffiliated, describing themselves as atheists, agnostics or "nothing in particular" when asked about their religion." In fact, data from Gallup, Pew, and PRRI, demonstrates that the percentage of Americans who identify with any religion is in steady decline, as are those who believe in God, the devil, Heaven, or Hell (Time Magazine Online, 2024). What is driving this trend and what are the implications for our politics, families and society as a whole?
