Heshima Mwalimu “Honored Teacher” A Legacy Inspired by Dr. Tom Spencer-Walters Event FlyerAbout this Event

Please join us for the 9th Annual Interdisciplinary Studies of Africa Minor Program Symposium. The theme this year is Heshima Mwalimu “Honored Teacher” A Legacy Inspired by Dr. Tom Spencer-Walters

After completing a B.A. in Honors English at the University of Sierra Leone, Freetown, Tom Spencer-Walters migrated to the United States and completed two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Communications at the University of Washington. At CSUN, where he has taught for over 25 years, he has authored numerous publications and taught about African languages, orality, memory, transnationalism and sustainability and his work has been influential in fields such as African and Global Studies, English, Composition and Rhetoric. We hope you will join us for an informative and meaningful symposium where, as the Swahili expression, Heshima Mwalimu, suggests, we will celebrate the “honored teacher” at CSUN, and through the lens of his life, leadership, and legacy, we will further our knowledge of Africa and the African Diaspora.
