Account: All CSUN students are entitled to a CSUN mainframe account. You will need your student ID number and your PIN. Click on https://www.csun.edu/account and follow instructions. Be careful to write down your password and userID.
Access Privileges: The College of Education laboratories are protected by security software that allows users access to certain things. When students receive a "insufficient access privileges" message, it indicates that they are trying to perform an operation which they have not been given privilege to use.Archive: To compress or "zip" a folder or file.
ASCII Text: ASCII text is the "lowest common denominator" for text transfer. If you can convert your text to ASCII code (also referred to as "text), you can transfer it to nearly all application software. To save a document as an ASCII file, use the File/SaveAs/Text option. ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange - an internationally-agreed character set; widely used in the computer industry. ASCII is a 7-bit code; the Standard ASCII Character Set consists of 128 decimal numbers ranging from zero through 127 assigned to letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and the most common special characters. A computer stores each character in a single byte, using the 7-bit code assigned to that character by the ASCII standard.See also binary encoded data, extended ASCII, EBCDIC. ASCII code appears below.
Attachments: You may send
fully formatted documents (e.g. Word, Excel, etc.) with email messages
as attachments.
The file you attach must have a proper extension to the file name in the
form of a dot ( . ) and a three character file type that
matches the document type. This is the only way the receiving software
knows how to handle the document. Typical
extensions might be:
.doc - Microsoft Word documents
.xls - Microsoft Excel document
.exe - a runnable PC program
.txt - a text file
.wav - a Windows audio file
.mov - a QuickTime Movie
Backgrounds in Powerpoint: "Although you only have two background designs automatically supplied with the Masters (counting both the Slide Master and the Title Master), you can have any design you want on any slide. From the Format menu, select Background. Check the box that says "omit background items" and this will make the slide ignore the Slide Master's design. You are now free to add whatever design you want to this slide. If you want to do this to many slides at once, go to the Slide Sorter, select the slides, and then use the Format menu command. Remember though that if you choose to do something like put aphotographic background on many of your slides instead of doing it once on the Master, that your file size may increase dramatically." (copied from BitBetter Corp.)
Backing up your files: Remember to always backup your work. It is not a matter of "if" media will fail, but rather "when" it will fail. For quick backup, put everything to be saved in a common folder, drag the folder to the shared server or your local hard drive folder. Remove the original disk, insert a second, and drag the copied folder onto the new disk.
Bandwith: Test your bandwith. The amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. For digital devices, the bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second(bps) or bytes per second.
Batteries: Laptop computer batteries last from approximately three hours. Change batteries before starting class. If the battery is low, put the computer in standby mode, remove the old battery and replace with a fresh one.
Boolean Searches: A method of searching text based on Boolean operators: an "and" operator between two words or other values (for example, "university AND northidge") means one is searching for documents containing both of the words or values. An "or" operator between two words or other values (e.g. "university OR northridge") means one is searching for documents containing either of the words. The term "Boolean" comes from George Boole, a 19th-century mathematician generally credited with inventing modern-day mathematical logic. AltaVista has extensive Boolean Search capabilities. These are summarized on their help page. The following table is from that page.(see searching and wildcards for more information)
CD: CDs store data digitally on optical disks. The College of Education maintains a CD server on the network. To access the server from a Macintosh, use the AppleMenu/Servers/CDServer. There are a variety of CD formats.cgi email: cgi email allows you to put forms on your website.

Classroom of the Future: We, at the CSUN college of Education, are very proud of our Classroom of the Future. It is a work in progressand we like it that way. When first conceived, we thought the facility should be a place to showcase the newest educational technologies. As our ideas developed we realized how much has been learned about the teaching and learning process that is not technology dependent, and how sometimes, technology itself can function in ways that are antithetical to the strides made in traditional instruction. Sometimes the very presence of computers in a learning environment can inhibit the subtle forms of communication between teacher and student and among students themselves. So we created a facility that showcases technology but does so in an environment that promotes interaction between all participants. We are committed to keeping the facility equipped with the latest technology and we encourage our faculty to report what they find when the those technologies, and proven learning strategies, meet in a well supported facility. Our goal is to train technologically proficient teachers that appreciate the complex range of issues that affect the teaching and learning process. We are confident that our Classroom of the Future will help us meet that goal.
Free Clipart: There are many sources of free clipart on the web, and a variety of web-based clipart-for-fee services. Colors (HTML)
You can change the color of text in java applicaitons and html pages. In html, BGCOLOR means, "background color", TEXT is "text color", LINK is "link color", VLINK is "viewed link", and ALINK is "active link". "F" means "full". Therefore, if you put all F for six digit, it'll give you white. The reason why is because if you mix all full of red, green, and blue, it will result white. "0" is just "0". Here's some of the color numbers:
FFFFFF = white FF0000 = red 00FF00 = green 0000FF = blue FF00FF = magenta 0000FF = cyan FFFF00 = yellow 000000 = black 2F4F2F = dark green 7093DB = dark turquoise 23238E = navy blue BC8F8F = pink
Compression: To make efficient use of space and speed things up, most large files are compressed.
File compression can cut down the size of files and their download time dramatically. Compression software uses complex mathematical equations to scan a file for repeating patterns in the data. It replaces the data with smaller codes that take up less room. For example, one way compression software works is to replace repeating text characters with a code that also notes the locations of those characters in the data. With a picture, it would find all of the blue pieces, for example, and replace them with a code for blue. To view compressed files, you need a compatible decompression program that can read these codes and convert the data back to its original form.
Most of the files you encounter on the Web will either be text, graphics, audio, or video files. Some may be compressed, others not. The most
common compressed files you will encounter on the Web are those with extensions like .zip, .sit and .tar. These extensions represent popular
compression formats for the PC, Macintosh, and UNIX. They may be single files or groups of files that have been bundled together into a single
archive. An archive file can sometimes contain video or graphics files within it and often contains software programs with related documentation.
To decompress a .zip file you need an utility like WinZIP or PKUNZIP. To unstuff a file with a .sit extension, you need a program called Stuffit Expander, which is a popular program for the Mac. Though PKZIP will not decompress files that have been "stuffed," there is a StuffIt Expander version for Windows that does. StuffIt Expander can also decompress other formats, including .zip. Files with a .sea or .exe extension are self-extracting files for the Macintosh and Windows, which means they do not require additional software to run.JPEG has better internal compression than GIF. BMP files and TIFF files will also be very large.
Computer Vendors: The following are sites where you can order computers on-line. I suggest that you review Dave's Computer Page before buying.
Copying Text and Graphics: It is possible to copy text and graphics from web pages in a couple of ways. Make certain to appropriately cite all quoted work.
Text copy and paste: Text can be copied by selecting (highlighting) and then simply copying it and pasting it. When captured in this fashion, it is possible to edit the text. When copying from a web site, one often receives unwanted formatting which can be removed at once using the appropriate find and replace. Screen capture of text:. A screen capture utility may be used to capture any text on the screen. Such text can not be edited, because the resulting file is in graphic format rather than text format. Screen capture of graphics: A screen capture utility may be used to capture any image on the screen. Such graphics can be edited by pasting them into a graphics editor such as PhotoShop.
Pasting graphics into assignments: For the portfolio, you will need to copy and paste many graphics. Using your screen capture utility, capture a portion of the screen that demonstrates competence with the required task or objective. Leave the graphic in the clipboard. Open the file into which you wish to paste your graphic. Use Edit/Paste Special, and turn off the "float over text option". With this option off, the graphic will be placed "in-line", and won't float over text. You will want to use the "float over text" option when positioning graphics when "typesetting" a document, but not when completing the templates for the portfolio.
Download: A file is downloaded when it is copied from a distant server to your local machine. Unless you specify otherwise, all files in our labs are copied into the NetscapeDownload folder where they are instantly checked for viruses. You may then copy them (by dragging) to you disk. Please drag your files from the Netscape Download folder to the trash empty the trash (Special/Empty Trash) when you are done with the files. Drop Box: An electronic drop box is directory or volume on a server on which students have write privileges, but do not have read privileges. As a result, they can deposit files in the drop box, but can not view or remove others work. It should be noted that files in the drop box can accidentally be replaced by newer files with the same name. Include your name in the title of the files you deposit, followed by a numeric code of your choice. The code will make the file name unique, so it is less likely to be accidentally be replaced. To access the drop box for your class from a laboratory computer, first open the chooser (Apple Menu/Chooser), and then select the appropriate folder for your class. You may need to obtain a password from your instructor to do this.
DVD: A Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) is an optical, high capacity version of the CD-ROM. While a CD-ROM can generally store a maximum storage of 650 MB of data, the new DVD discs can 17 GB. DVD is used to store everything from computer games to software applications to full-length movies. The DVD drive will be able to read any CDs that you have now, but in order to take advantage of this new technology, you will need to get a DVD drive in your new computer.
Editing Graphics: Graphics must be edited within a graphic program (such as Claris Draw or PhotoShop) or a graphic module within a application program such as Word. To edit within a separate graphics program, first load the program and then open the graphic file. To edit within Word, double click on the graphic and use the drawing tools that appear on the screen. You may also add graphic features in layers on top of the graphic file or any text within your document by using tools from the drawing toolbar menu (View/Toolbars/Drawing).

Email: Commercial Internet Service Providers (ISP). You may use the free CSUN account but we suggest that you consider a commercial provider to ensure rapid access to the Internet. We do not endorse any service provider but you can click here to compare prices and services in the LA area. CSUN account: Every registered CSUN student is eligible for a CSUN Internet and email account. When requesting an account from College of Education Computer Labs, use the following procedure. Free email providers - A variety of free email service providers are available such as yahoo, juno and hotmail. Be aware that these services bombard you with advertising. For the purposes of this class, we will illustrate all email functions using yahoo email. Secure your own yahoo email account for use in class. Note: Most Internet service providers also provide at least one free email account with basic service. You may wish to add free accounts so others can have their own private email accounts using the same ISP.
Embedded Graphics: Within Word you may insert a variety of graphics files such as Excel Charts, Excel Worksheets, Graphs, Organization Charts, Equations, and Word Art. Insert/Object or Insert/Picture
.EPSF (.eps): Encapsulated PostScript Format files store images in two formats (PICT and PostScript). PICT is used for the screen display, PostScript for the printing.
Equation Editor: Word includes an equation editor which is a simplified version of MathType. It is not installed automatically, but appears in an "Extras" Folder on your installation diskette. It is installed in the laboratory computers and is accessed by Insert/Object/Microsoft Equation. The file is a graphic file and can be sized and moved like all other graphics.
Extensions: File extension names, such as .doc, .pdf, .txt, etc. tell you something about the file type. The listing of file names may help you identify file types.See also (1) video files, (2) audio files, (3) MIME
File Server: A file server is a computer that is set up to deliver program and data files to remote users. The College of Education maintains a variety of file servers. Ed1Mac, Ed2Mac, and CDServer contain a variety of education software titles. To access Ed2Mac, Use AppleMenu/Servers/Ed2Mac. An icon of the file server will appear on your desktop once you have opened it. Double-click on the icon to see the contents of the server, and select the folder you wish to review

Grammar Checker: Most word processors come with spelling/grammar/style checkers. In Word it is accessed through Tools/Spelling & Grammar. You may determine what is analyzed using Tools/Preferences/Grammar. Please note that you can also learn of grammar and style rules whenever a potential error is highlighted
.Graphics (positioning): Word positions graphics as "floating" or "non-floating objects". Floating objects give you more flexibility but can produce some confusing results. If you wish to insert a graphic in the cell of a table or immediately after a paragraph (as in the assignment templates), use PasteSpecial and turn off the "float over text" option. If you simply paste a graphic, it will be in "floating" mode, and can be dragged wherever you wish on the page.
Graphics (text wrap): To enable text to wrap around a graphic or text box, first select the object and then use Format/Textbox or Format/Picture to access the text wrapping option. If you wish to position a graphic in the background, select no wrap, and then position the graphic in the background using the draw menu. If the draw menu is not showing, turn it on using the View/Menus command

Internet Hard Drive: A number of companies such as yahoo (briefcase function) offer free internet hard drives on which you can store your files. This is particularly helpful if you wish to work on files in the lab, at work, and at home, and do not want to bring disks or worry about disk compatability.
Internet Service Provider: To get access to the internet from home, it is necessary to have an internet service provider (ISP). Some companies provide free internet access: Xoom, NetZero, AltaVista Free Access, Freei, No Charge, NoPay, Tritium, WorldSpy, FreeWorld, FREEWEB. Many of these and other companies also offer free web space.

Memory: Read about the binary system and computer memory.
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) and File Extensions: When sending files over the Internet a file name extension must be be attached to a file. The extension identifies the file as either text or binary. The receiving end uses the file name extension to determine what kind of file it is and what program is expected to open or use the data. When a browser asks for a file to be retrieved, it sends the server a list of the file types it can handle. The server then examines the list and the requested file name extension and matches the correct transmission method to the file. In the same way, when an e-mail attachment contains a file, the sender's mail client will attach a MIME type to the file. Where browsers and FTP clients use file extensions to determine the file type, e-mail clients use the MIME type to determine the action at the receiving end. See also (1) video files, (2) audio files, (3) extensions
OCR: Optical Character Recognition Software. In our labs we use OmniPage.
Ofoto: OFoto is scanner software that captures drawings or photographs as files. You may save the file and insert it into a Word document using the Insert/Picture/From File command. You may also copy it from the screen and paste into a document using a screen capture utility.
OmniPage: OmniPage is OCR (optical character recognition) software that turns printed text from a page into ASCII Text. Use the AutoScan feature to acquire text. Select this text and copy to your word processor. Do not save as a OmniPage document, because you will not be able to use it again unless you have
Pathnames: A pathname describes the path necessary to access a particular file. For example, the pathname Ed2Mac/coursework/514/assignment.doc would indicate that the file "assignment.doc" resided in the 514 folder, within the coursework folder, on the Ed2Mac computer.Permissions: Material in a website is visible only if the permissions have been set to allow others to read the files.
Pfishing: Pfishing is amethod of identity theft where con men use fake e-mail that looks like it comes from legitimate sources, hoping recipients will provide login, passwords, social security numbers, etc.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the act of taking credit for someone else's written work. Please refer to the University's policy on plagiarism. The Internet has made plagiarism a more common problem since students can simply copy and paste work and claim it as their own. Fortunately, it is possible to catch much plagiarism simply through using a search engine that allow you to search by submitting strings of words. If you suspect plagiarism, find an unusual string of words, copy this string and place it in quotes in your search engine and search. No search engine is complete in its search, so it may be necessary to search using a couple of search engines. I suggest the advanced search feature in Altavista which may allow you to simultaneously search for two independent strings of words.
PICT (.pic): A QuickDraw Picture file routine used by many drawing and painting programs. Screen captures are saved as PICT files. Portable Data Format,
PDF: You may wish to post formatted data (e.g. data tables, etc.) on the web. Such documents can be saved as PDF (Page Description Format) files using Adobe Acrobat, and then viewed after downloading using Adobe Acrobat Reader. The documents contain all of the original formatting features.
Public Domain Text: There is a tremendous amount of classic public domain text on the Internet. This information can be incorporated into this assignment if you wish. The following is a list of sites that include such material. Note: Most of this is public domain, but some may be copyrighted. There are ways of copying public domain text to your word processor while keeping the formatting
Publishing and Subscribing: "Publishing and subscribing" allows users to develop dynamic, integrated documents built on the contributions of one or more users. When a published portion is updated and saved, the subscribing file is automatically updated to reflect this change. For example, a teacher in a networked laboratory can make a develop a document that subscribes to published portions from numerous students on the network. As the students update their work, the composite teacher document reflects these changes.
Readability: You may analyze the grade level appropriateness of text by using Word's readability tool. On the Tools menu, click preferences, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab. Select the "Check grammar with spelling" check box. Select the "Show readability statistics" check box, and then click OK. Click Tools/Spelling and Grammar.
Flesch-Kincaid Formula for Readability
This is a US Government Department of Defense standard test [16].
(i) Calculate L, the average sentence length (number of words ÷ number of sentences). Estimate the number of sentences to the nearest
tenth, where necessary.
(ii) Calculate N, the average number of syllables per word (number of syllables ÷ number of words).
Then grade level = ( L ? 0.39 ) + ( N ? 11.8 ) - 15.59
So Reading Age = ( L ? 0.39 ) + ( N ? 11.8 ) - 10.59 years.
Replace: See text from the web.

Sattelite Reception: Laboratories in the College of Education can receive video feed from the University Video Center. Click here for instructions on how to access these resources from 2101..
Save Files: In our CSUN College of Education laboratories, students are allowed to save to removable media (zip disk, superdisk, or floppy disk), to the public shared file server, or to a folder on their own hard drive, generally called "Netscape Download"or "Student Files". In the interest of speed we recommend that you save to the folder on your local hard drive first, and then copy to removable media or the shared server as necessary. Some files you will work with are very large and will fill up 1.4 M floppy diskettes very quickly, so we recommend 100 MB zip disks in those labs where they are available. Remember to always backup your work. You are strongly encouraged to back up all work on an internet hard drive.
- Most efficient procedure for CSUN labs: (1) Empty your computers local user folder (generally referred to as Netscape Download) on your desktop.(2) Copy files you wish to work on from your Zip disk, superdisk or floppy to the user folder.(3) Open your files in the user folder, work on them, and save regularly.
- (4) When you are ready to leave, copy them back onto your Zip disk, superdisk or floppy disk. Make certain to make two copies.
Scanner: There are scanners for student use in 2121A and 2121B education building. These scanners are not networked, so you must be at the computer to which the scanner is attached. The scanner must be turned on before the computer is turned on to be recognized by the computer. For optical character recognition (OCR) use the OmniPage found under the application menu. For scanning pictures, use OFoto found under the application menu.
Screen Capture Utility: Screen capture software allows you to capture and then save, print or copy pictures from the screen. In general, it will be best to save screen-captures as .jpg files. See more details.
Searching the Web: When trying to get specific information, it is best to use a search engine such as AltaVista with advanced search features such as Boolean Querys. In addition, to Boolean logic, AltaVista offers the following advanced search options which are sometimes not included on their own help page. (see searching and wildcards for more information) (See also Boolean Search and wildcards)
Keyword | Symbol | Action (Boolean Operators) |
---|---|---|
AND | & | Finds only documents containing all of the specified words or phrases. Mary AND lamb finds documents with both the word Mary and the word lamb. |
OR | | | Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. Mary OR lamb finds documents containing either Mary or lamb. The found documents could contain both, but do not have to. |
NOT | ! | Excludes documents containing the specified word or phrase. Mary AND NOT lamb finds documents with Mary but not containing lamb. NOT cannot stand alone--use it with another operator, like AND. For example, AltaVista does not accept Mary NOT lamb; instead, specify Mary AND NOT lamb. |
NEAR | ~ | Finds documents containing both specified words or phrases within 10 words of each other. Mary NEAR lamb would find the nursery rhyme, but likely not religious or Christmas-related documents. |
Keyword | Function |
---|---|
anchor:text | Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the text of a hyperlink. anchor:"Click here to visit AltaVista" would find pages with "Click here to visit AltaVista" as a link. |
applet:class | Finds pages that contain a specified Java applet. Use applet:morph to find pages using applets called morph. |
domain:domainname | Finds pages within the specified domain. Use domain:de to find pages from Germany, or use domain:org to find pages from organizations. |

title:text | Finds pages that contain the specified word or phrase in the page title (which appears in the title bar of most browsers). The search title:Elvis would find pages with Elvis in the title. |
url:text | Finds pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL. Use url:altavista to find all pages on all servers that have the word altavista in the host name, path, or filename--the complete URL, in other words. |
Server: See file server.
Sharing Files in the laboratory: Instructors and students often have a need to share files while working in the laboratory. To accommodate this need, we have established a file server on which students have read/write privileges. When you save files on Ed2Temp and Ed1Temp, any other individual using the LAN can access the files. To access these servers from a Macintosh computer, use the Apple/Server menu, or the Chooser. Please understand that these servers are public temporary storage facilities. Do not leave valuable information on these servers.

Text from Web: There is much public domain material on the web that can be copied and incorporated into documents. Using copy and paste, however, may result in messy text because formatting characters (particularly paragraph marks and spaces) are inserted. (Method A) Copy and paste material from the web into your document. Before replacing text, click on the paragraph symbol in the standard menu bar to reveal hidden codes such as paragraph symbols, tabs and spaces. Determine the codes that need to be removed and then use the replace function (Edit/Replace). Enter them in the "Find what" category, and enter the code to replace it with (often nothing) in the "replace with box". (Method B) Alternatively, you may get material from the web to your document by first saving the web page to disk as source (the default is generally "text" and must be changed to "source". Open up your word processor program, and then use the file open command to open this document. If the document does not show, you may have to change the list of file types to "All files". Your word processor will convert the html text into word processing text. You may then select the appropriate text and use the copy and paste to move the text into a new file. There are many sources of public domain text on the web that you may import and cite.
Thesaurus: Word has a built in thesaurus (Tools/Language/Thesaurus). You may also select to use resources on the Internet such as

Viruses: "A virus is parasitic program written intentionally to enter a computer without the users permission or knowledge. The word parasitic is used because a virus attaches to files or boot sectors and replicates itself thus continuing to spread. Though some virus's do little but replicate others can cause serious damage or effect program and system performance. A virus should never be assumed harmless and left on a system....A virus is inactive until the infected program is run or boot record is read. As the virus is activated it loads into the computers memory where it can perform a triggered event or spread itself. Disks used in an infected system can then carry the virus to another machine. Programs downloaded from bulletin boards can also spread a virus." (information from Symantec Home Page)Data files can transmit viruses if they contain macro codes. Such code is frequently found in programs like Excel and Word. For more information on how viruses work, click here.
To prevent viruses: CSUN students can download free Anti-virus software.
- Don't install anything you haven't gotten from a trusted source. If
you download software from the Internet, be sure to get it from a reputable
manufacturer or site.Install anti-virus software. I suggest McAfee for the PC and Norton Antivirus
from Symantec for the
Mac. Keep your virus protection software up-to-date. New viruses are always
cropping up, so a new version of the software to combat it comes out
every few months! To prevent the worst-case scenario of being unable to recover information destroyed by a virus, make a habit of backing up all files that are important to you. - Be particularly carefu with email attachments. All downloaded files should be scanned before opening. Most virus protection software have options to scan all downloaded files. Make certain that this option is selected.
Visitor account: Get a temporary account. (Guest access to the CSUN wireless system)
Web Archive: A web archive is a single file that includes the web pages you have saved and all links. A web archive allows you to use files offline. This can be particularly valuable in an educational setting in where you do not have reliable internet access. When you open the web archive, you see the web page as it appears on the Web — even when you’re not connected to the Internet. You can easily move the Web archive to another computer or link to it from other files.
Web Development Tools - Tools for developing websites.
WebDrive - The web-Drive is an extra storage area that provides additional disk space for campus users who wish to store their desktop files and folders on a remote server.
Web Graphics: Web graphics are in either JPG or GIF format. Most modern word processors can import graphics in these formats. To select a graphic, simply hold the mouse button down and choose whether you want it to be saved, printed, or copied to the clipboard. If you copy it to a clipboard, you may then paste it into another file (word processor, etc.) Make certain to cite sources.
WebSite Hosting (free). A number of companies offer free web-hosting: Homestead, Xoom, Geocities, Quikpage, Webjump, Angelfire, TheGlobe, Tripod. A number of companites offer free internet access and web space.Web Text: Please see text from the web.
Wildcards: When searching the web it is often useful to use wildcards to expand your search. Many search engines allow you to use * in a keyword to find multiple options. For example, by typing an * at the end of a keyword, you can search for the word with multiple endings. For example, typing wish*, will find wish, wishes, wishful, wishbone, and wishy-washy. Many programs designate a * for any number of characters, and a ? for single characters.
Zip Disk: Many of our computers are equipped with 100 MB Zip disks. In other labs we have Superdiscs.
