Overtime and Compensatory Time Off:

Non-exempt employees are eligible for overtime (OT) or compensatory time off (CTO) for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per work week.

Compensation for overtime hours worked is governed by the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees eligible for overtime pay must receive prior authorization to work overtime from their department manager. Nonexempt employees working more than 40 hours in a work week are paid the premium rate of 1 ½ times the regular hourly rate.

The following guidelines apply:

  1. Non-exempt employees are in classifications that are eligible for overtime, in accordance with the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FSLA).

  2. Overtime is defined as pre-authorized time worked in excess of 40 hours in a designated work week, not over 8 hours in a given day, unless on an alternate work schedule. Supervisors of employees on alternate work schedules may consult with Payroll Administration for assistance in reporting overtime. Approved overtime is reported on the Extra Hours Worked Authorization form.

  3. When a University holiday falls within an employee’s regular schedule, it is considered time worked when computing overtime.

  4. Overtime may be compensated in the employee’s pay warrant or by CTO, as determined by the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The university expects work assignments for full time exempt employees to occupy a minimum of 40 hours per week. Exempt employees do not earn CTO or OT. Please refer to “The Work Day” (at the top of this section).
