Dr. Ramesh's Biography

S. K. Ramesh is a Professor of ECE and Director and Lead PI of the Secure for Student Success (SfS2) program, supported with a multi-year Title V grant from the US Department of Education program. Previously, he founded and led the multi-institutional nationally recognized AIMS2 program supported with a five year, $ 6 Million grant from the US Department of Education that was preceded by a five year, $ 5.5 Million grant also led by Dr. Ramesh. For more information on the AIMS2 program please visit www.ecs.csun.edu/aims2. It was recognized with the 2021 UEDA (University Economic Development Association) Award of Excellence and as a 2021 Inspiring Program in STEM by Insight into Diversity. Earlier it was recognized as the baccalaureate degree program of the year and the 2019 Example of Excelencia in October 2019. Earlier, Dr. Ramesh served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science from Aug 2006 - Aug 2017. Earlier he was Professor of Electrical Engineering CSU, Sacramento where he was the Department Chair from '94 to '06. Dr. Ramesh was the 2016-2017 Vice President, IEEE Educational Activities, and served on the IEEE Board of Directors. He served as the 2016 President of IEEE-HKN, the international Electrical Engineering Honor Society. Dr. Ramesh is the 2022-23 President of ABET and was elected to the position in March 2021. He chairs the ABET Board of Directors and leads over 2,200 ABET volunteers and staff to fulfill ABET’s mission. As ABET’s 2021-22 President-Elect, he chaired the ABET Board of Delegates. Dr. Ramesh has served ABET in multiple roles as a Program Evaluator representing IEEE, and was elected as the chair of the Engineering Area Delegation of ABET in November 2019. In this capacity Dr. Ramesh served on the ABET Board of Directors representing 32 member societies including the IEEE, with ABET accredited programs in Engineering worldwide. Earlier he served on the ABET Board of Delegates from 2015-2019, and on the ABET Board of Directors from 2013-2015, when he represented IEEE.

As the Dean at CSU Northridge, Ramesh forged a strong relationship between the college and the professional engineering community through innovative programs such as Tech Fest, and the annual Senior Design Project Showcase. His efforts strengthened the pipeline and helped students explore their career options while encouraging academic excellence.  As dean, Dr. Ramesh recruited over 35 new faculty members and led active interdisciplinary centers in Energy Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He helped build a robust industry advisory board at the college level and active industry liaison councils at the program level. This has led to several productive partnerships benefiting students and faculty.

Among the unique interdisciplinary programs that he helped develop at CSUN is a Master’s degree program in Assistive Technology Engineering. Graduates from the program help design and create products to serve persons with disabilities. Enrollment in the college’s programs more than doubled during his tenure and continues to grow with over 4,900 students in five departments.  He led the college and its programs through two successful ABET accreditation visits in 2007 and 2013. Ramesh is an ardent advocate of student success and is the PI of a nationally acclaimed five year, $ 5.5 Million grant from the US Department of Education’s HSI-STEM program entitled AIMS2 to support and graduate underrepresented minorities in engineering and computer science. This program was selected for sequel funding with a $ 6 Million grant from USDE in 2016 also under Dr. Ramesh’s leadership as the Director and Lead Principal Investigator. The program was recognized with an Honorable mention by Excelencia in Education in September 2014, and was a finalist for baccalaureate program of the year in 2018. Also in 2018, the program was one of ten programs worldwide that was shortlisted for the Global Engineering Deans Council Diversity Award sponsored by Airbus.  In 2014 Ramesh was invited by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to host one of the four national White House STEM workshops at CSU Northridge. This very successful workshop was held at CSUN on October 7, 2014 and attracted leaders from academia, government, and industry to discuss efforts to broaden participation in the STEM disciplines, remove barriers, and improve student graduation rates- especially in engineering and computer science.

Dr. Ramesh is a candidate for 2025 IEEE President-Elect in the IEEE elections that will run from August 15 – October 1, 2024. He has served the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) extensively, including the IEEE Educational Activities Board, the IEEE-HKN (www.hkn.org)  Electrical Engineering Honor Society Board of Governors, the IEEE e-learning Library Editorial Board, and on the ABET (www.abet.org) Board of Directors. He served on the IEEE Products, Services, and Publications Board in 2020-21, and as the Chair of the IEEE-HKN Development Committee from 2019-21.  Ramesh has also served ABET as a program evaluator representing IEEE. He has delivered several invited presentations, workshops, and plenaries on outcomes based education; most recently during ICACIT 2014 in Lima, Peru, and ICTIEE 2015 in Bangalore, India. He was the Chair of the 2014 IEEE EAB Pre-University Coordinating Committee responsible for signature programs such as TISP (Teacher in Service Program) and EPICS in IEEE (Engineering Projects in Community Service). He served as the 2015-16 President-Elect of IEEE-HKN and has served as the Chair of the IEEE EAB Awards and Recognition Committee, the IEEE Awards Board, and on the ABET Nominating Committee.  He is a Past President of the CSUS Sigma Xi Chapter (Scientific Research Society www.sigmaxi.org) and has been recognized with several awards for innovative teaching, scholarship and service to the profession and the community. In 2012 he was recognized with the “John Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year” award by the Engineers Council (www.sfvec.org).  Some of his other awards include the 2004 IEEE Region 6 Community Service Award and the 2000 Person of the Year Award from the Sacramento Engineering and Technology Regional Consortium. In April 2007 he was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award from NITT, his alma mater in India, for his contributions as a faculty member, department chair and dean, as well as for his leadership in professional societies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. and Sigma Xi. Ramesh is an IEEE Fellow recognized for his contributions to entrepreneurship in engineering education.

Ramesh’s research interests span the areas of high speed (Terabit/sec) optical communication systems, devices and electronic circuit design. He has several publications to his credit in these areas. He volunteers his time to support and improve engineering education in India by offering classes and webinars online under the auspices of the IUCEE – Indo US Collaborative for Engineering Education (www.iucee.org). Ramesh graduated with the B.E. degree (Honors, 1981) in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirapalli in the University of Madras, India, and received the M.S.E.E. (1983) and Ph.D. (1986) degrees from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Prior to joining CSUS in 1987, he was a Visiting Professor at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
