Dear College of Education Community,
October is LGBTQ+ History Month in recognition of the first march on Washington for gay rights on October 1979, and is a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ achievements and a reminder to promote equity and inclusivity in the face of prejudice. Systemic oppression often puts mental health and well-being at risk for members of our LBGTQIA+ communities. Missouri high school teacher Rodney Wilson created LGBTQ+ History Month in 1994 to counter prejudice and instead, celebrate LGBTQ+ history by teaching about it. As educators, we can also promote self-care, awareness, equity, and inclusion through educational engagement that breaks down ignorance and oppression, and rather supports both LGBTQIA+ adults and students to thrive.
You can celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month at CSUN with many programs on campus over the next two weeks. Please share these opportunities with students and colleagues!
