He graduated from the California State University, Northridge, in 1987 and obtained a law degree from the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law. Emhoff opened his law firm in 2000, which he sold in 2006. He worked in Washington, D.C., and California as a partner for DLA Piper in 2017 but stepped down when Harris became vice president.
