Self-care and Veteran's Day

November 6, 2023

Dear College of Education Community,

Self-care is an important concept that can be particularly relevant to Veterans on Veterans Day. Veterans Day, observed on November 11th in the United States, is a day dedicated to honoring and thanking military veterans for their service and sacrifice. It's a time to recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. For veterans, as well as for the broader community, self-care can play a crucial role in acknowledging and supporting the well-being of those who have served.

Here are some ways in which self-care can be intertwined with Veterans Day:

  1. Reflect and Remember: Veterans Day can be an emotionally charged time for veterans, as they may be remembering their service, comrades, and the challenges they faced. Self-care can involve taking the time to reflect on their experiences, whether through personal contemplation, talking with fellow veterans, or seeking the support of mental health professionals.
  2. Seek Support: Veterans who may be struggling with physical or mental health issues related to their service should prioritize seeking help and support. This can include accessing healthcare services through the VA (Veterans Affairs) system or connecting with veteran support organizations.
  3. Connect with Others: Building and maintaining social connections is an essential aspect of self-care. Veterans can benefit from connecting with fellow veterans, joining support groups, or participating in community events to share their experiences and build a sense of camaraderie.
  4. Practice Gratitude: On Veterans Day, veterans often receive thanks and recognition from the community. It's a time for them to practice self-care by accepting and appreciating this gratitude, as it can be a source of positive affirmation.
  5. Engage in Relaxation and Stress Management: Veterans can use self-care practices such as meditation, yoga, exercise, and relaxation techniques to manage stress, reduce anxiety, and promote mental and physical well-being.
  6. Pursue Hobbies and Interests: Engaging in hobbies and activities that bring joy and fulfillment is a key aspect of self-care. Veterans can use Veterans Day as an opportunity to revisit or discover new interests.
  7. Plan for the Future: Veterans can also take time on Veterans Day to think about their future goals and aspirations, whether they involve career transitions, education, or other life changes. Self-care involves setting and working toward these goals.

It's important to remember that self-care is not limited to a single day but is a continuous process of prioritizing one's well-being. Veterans Day can serve as a reminder to veterans and their communities of the importance of self-care, but it should be practiced throughout the year. Additionally, supporting and showing appreciation for veterans through acts of kindness, understanding, and outreach is a valuable form of community involvement on this special day.
