Film Screening of The Strike - Wednesday, October 30th at 4:00PM
On Wednesday, October 30th at 4:00PM, in Maple Hall 100, the Department of Criminology and Justice Studies is screening a documentary titled; "The Strike" The Strike is a documentary that tells the story of a generation of California men as they endured decades of solitary confinement and, against all odds, launch the largest prison hunger strike in US history. Told through interviews with formerly incarcerated people, organizers and archival footage, the film makes a case against the use of long-term solitary confinement by illuminating the power of organizing this incarcerated people-led resistance, that actively worked with academics, legal professionals, and family members to change the policies with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The documentary follows 5 organizers in the first five years after their release from incarceration and how they are building community in the free world. There will be a film screening and panel discussion with 3 of the protagonists in the film and the 2 directors. If you interested in attending, please use this link HERE to RSVP. There will be a short reception after the panel, with food for students and the panelists to continue engaging in a more informal setting.

Conversation with Lydia Emily - Wednesday, October 30th, 11:30AM
On Wednesday, October 30th at 11:30am in the Ferman Presentation Room, University Library, The English Department is hosting an event with artist and activist Lydia Emily, and is one of the preeminent female street artists of our time. Her mural on skid row which honors a survivor of sex-trafficking is her longest-standing untouched and untagged mural. Her art is very political and the event seeks to foster the connection between art and politics. In addition, Lydia Emily is a spokesperson for the MS Society and is the subject of a beautiful documentary, The Art of Rebellion; we urge you to watch the trailer for the documentary at that link if you want to see a little more about her. The synopsis states "The Art of Rebellion follows activist, street artist and single mother, Lydia Emily, as she defies a crippling progressive multiple sclerosis diagnosis threatening to take away her life and livelihood. Fighting against the unforgiving healthcare system while battling the symptoms sending her there, Lydia ties paintbrushes to her failing hands and creates large-scale works of creative resistance." She has a memoir that will be published in September, another attempt of hers to document her life and legacy before she "loses memory" even more. Please watch this documentary & learn more about Lydia Emily below! Learn more HERE! Submit questions for the event HERE!
