The Writers Strike May Cost $3 Billion— And That’s Just in LA County

In 2008, Jack Kyser, the former chief economist of the LAEDC, estimated that Los Angeles County’s economy took a $2.5 billion hit due to the strike, a figure that also includes damages to small businesses in the area dependent on the entertainment industry (caterers, event planners, limousine services, hair salons, etc.). Weighing Kyser’s estimate, along with factors like inflation and the potential duration of this walkout, Todd Holmes, an associate professor of entertainment media management at Cal State Northridge, told The Los Angeles Times that he’s forecasting that the 2023 strike could cost the local economy $3 billion, and possibly more if complex sticking points continue to impede a deal between the WGA and the AMPTP.
