Self-care and Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 16, 2023

Dear College of Education Community,

This week we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and embrace his message of racial and social justice. “For many, this holiday is spent as a day of reflection and service, honoring King’s anti-racist, non-violent work in a time of an unprecedented social reckoning and increased violence across the nation,” as stated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison Healthy Minds Innovations (HMI) Center website. The vision of this center rings true for all. That is, “to reflect the truly diverse nature of the world in a space that has often discounted the contributions and different perspectives of the BIPOC community. Well-Being is needed for all – and our vision of a kinder, wiser, more compassionate world goes hand in hand with anti-racist work.” In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the HMI Center offers the following resources for self-care as it relates to racial and social justice:

  • A seated meditation from our insight pillar, “The Stories We Tell Ourselves,” to support self-inquiry into our ingrained beliefs.

“We hope these resources can support a day filled with growth and compassion. May all beings have peace on this day and beyond.” Healthy Minds Innovations, Inc. (HMI) is a non-profit affiliated with the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, driven by a mission to translate neuroscientific research into tools to cultivate well-being. HMI believes that well-being is a skill and that anyone can train their mind. Please view our statement of promotion of anti-racist policies across our products, hiring and culture.
