CSUN's Veronica Valdez Montoya: The Chicano movement turned my shame and embarrassment into my voice, my identity, my pride

I can still remember pulling up to the apartments on the corner of Montezuma Road and College Avenue with everything I owned in the back of my black Ford Escort. Knowing that my aunt lived close to San Diego State University, on a whim and without any notice, I drove to San Diego in 1996 in the hopes that I could transfer from Hartnell College to SDSU and finally finish my undergraduate degree.
