A Saver's Guide to Eating and Living Well

Steven Loy, Ph.D.

What is the value (if any) to calorie counting?
I believe there is value in calorie counting but also believe education on portion sizes and healthy foods is an advantage in the long run. https://www.myplate.gov/ This resource provides excellent information and tools that will help remove the tedious and sometimes demoralizing task of paying attention to every calorie. Does it matter? Yes, it absolutely does as a positive caloric balance over time will lead to gradual weight gain. However, there are other factors to consider such as exercise or physical activity when it comes to creating a caloric balance or stable weight. Just as the scale weight matters, weight varies day to day and can be somewhat demoralizing if weight loss is the goal. A better gauge over time is how your clothes fit, how you feel and understanding the health value of a well-balanced diet. The website can provide the average person with valuable education which can be very empowering as they control the type and amount of foods consumed.
