Overview: The San Fernando Valley (SFV or “Valley”) represents a unique community of interest within the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. Due to its distinct geography, the SFV is fundamentally different from the remainder of the City and County of Los Angeles. Further, the demonstrable subregions of the SFV also form distinctive communities that deserve recognition. It is important to understand the demographic and socioeconomic natures of the differing populations across the SFV and their internal connections to foster strong community engagement and empowerment, as well as to develop effective policy aimed at the unique needs of these communities. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) paired with geospatial and demographic data, this analysis demonstrates that the San Fernando Valley is a community of interest due to its unique geographic structure and composition.
