Dear College of Education Community,
Want to be inspired at the end of this very challenging academic year? This Tuesday, May 18th, at 8:30 p.m., we have the opportunity to listen to a free live lecture by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, offered through the University of California, Santa Barbara Creating Hope lecture series and their Department of Tibetan Studies. The Dalai Lama has much to say about education and how to envision educational leaders of tomorrow. He believes that current education could do much more to foster inner values that nurture social, emotional, and ethical skills in students. Recently, he has consulted with a new k-12 educational program at Emory University called the Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning) Program. He asserts that programs of this kind in combination with modern education will lead to a new generation brought up to respect and implement compassion, and will lead to our moving away from divisions into us and them. As we reflect on this year of COVID losses, we can also consider new opportunities to envision education and well-being for all, similar to the message from the Dalai Lama.

Describing himself as a simple Buddhist monk, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama is believed to be a manifestation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, inspired by a wish to benefit all sentient beings and vowing to help humanity. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. Chief among His Holiness' principal commitments, he is concerned with encouraging people to be happy, advocating the cultivation of warm-heartedness and human values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline.
