The Common Read Selection Committee is delighted to announce that the Common Read for 2021-2022 is When They Call You a Terrorist by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and asha bandele. Khan-Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, was raised in the San Fernando Valley, attended Cleveland High School, and paints a picture of growing up in Los Angeles that many of our students may recognize. It's a frank memoir about growing up Black in Los Angeles and covers a variety of issues including systemic racism, prejudice, police violence, mental health, incarceration, and more, that explain how she became the artist, organizer, and freedom fighter she is today.
