We have witnessed a shocking amount of violence and destruction in Washington D.C. in the past week. At a time when the world has been filled with so much hate, it is also a time to be especially mindful of how we can move forward. This hate is not going away any time soon. So how do we take care of ourselves and also contribute to making the world a better place?
- Surround yourself with support.
Discuss your feelings of concern and fear with trusted, like-minded friends who are empathetic and will listen. Process your feelings with them rather than isolating yourself. To stay grounded, be moderate in media viewing.
- Consider meditation.
Having trouble sleeping and eating? Try relaxation routines. Psychology Today states “practicing meditation can help clear away the mind’s chatter. Studies show that meditating even for as little as 10 minutes increases the brain's alpha waves (associated with relaxation) and decreases anxiety and depression.”. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/meditation
- Learn something new.
Being at home more may be a good opportunity to learn something new, starting with a timely conversation about combating systemic injustice. Now is a good time to seek out articles, books, podcasts and documentaries that address social justice. Also, journaling can be a great outlet for processing life experiences. Staying home can give us more time to channel energy into activities that offer a chance to slow down, process the moment, and think about how we might contribute to making the world a better place.
