Self-care for the holidays

December 14, 2020

Dear College of Education Community,

The 2020 holiday season is like no other we have ever experienced, and never has self-care been more important. By connecting with loved ones in new ways, and remembering what brings all of us joy, this holiday can still be special. The American Psychological Association offers a number of self-care tips for a good holiday experience that are especially helpful this year in an article titled, “Making the most of the holiday season,.”

Take time for yourself — Remember that you’re only one person and can only accomplish certain things, especially at this time. Sometimes self-care is the best thing you can do — others will benefit when you’re feeling less stressed. Reflect on aspects of your life that bring you happiness, and take regular moments to engage in those activities that help you to feel better.

Volunteer —Helping others may lift your mood and help you put your own life in perspective.

Have realistic expectations — No Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or other holiday celebration is perfect. View this year’s challenges as opportunities to exercise your flexibility and resilience.

Remember what's important — The barrage of news about the pandemic and politics can make you forget what the holiday season is really about. Take time to remember.

Have healthy conversations— Let your family know that holidays are times to express gratitude, appreciation and give thanks for what you have, even if you can’t be physically together with each other.

Seek support — Talk about your worries and concerns with close friends and family. Reach out for regular connection and support, especially if you are isolated due to social distancing, and offer the same to others.

This year we can redefine our holiday experience and hold true to what is most important at this time of year-gratitude for all the good people and things that we have in our lives!

With gratitude for each one of you and hope for us all in the new year,

Shari
