Help Our Student Leaders Stay Connected, Engaged & Ready to Lead

If you are working or interacting with students, the Matador Involvement Center would like your help to get the word out about workshops available to keep our student leaders motivated and engaged.

The Clubs & Organizations Team would like to encourage students to stay engaged in the CSUN community under the current climate. We want to start by providing student leaders with resources that we hope will aid them in guiding their student-run organizations effectively, even during challenging times. If you advise or work with a student organization that you believe could benefit from one of the following workshops, please send them the links provided below. Thank you!

Leadership Development Clinics:

  • Organic Coaching - A helpful leadership competency that will assist you in coaching your team members to improve the success of your student organization.
  • Elevation Through Delegation – Learn to elevate the success of your organization and team productivity through the use of delegation.
  • Exploring Cultural Humility - Most student organizations are culturally diverse, and my goal is to prepare students to lead global organizations of the future. Let's explore Cultural Humility and some tools that can be used in combination with this model to help you become an extraordinary leader of diverse groups.

VUCA Workshop Series:

We have adopted a concept from the Army War College called VUCA. This concept is tailored to fit our student organizations. Please watch the introduction and each proceeding workshop in the series. If you need more information or an individualized session. Contact us: nikiya.mcwilliams@ csun.edu

Volatility: Times when things change quickly without much warning or prediction.
Uncertainty: Times when there is a frequent disruption with very little information and not much direction.
Complexity: Times when you realize multiple factors are influencing your complicated situation, and not all elements are known or understood.
Ambiguity: Times when events can be interpreted in many ways, and past experiences do not help to explain the current situation.

You Are Invited to End the Silence and Learn More About Antiracism

Whether or not you were able to attend “End the Silence” on June 10, we hope that everyone – students, staff, faculty, and administrators – will join us in fighting racism at CSUN and in our communities. Our event had a groundswell of support; we had over 140 attendees and we have a list of over 160 interested folks.

Now, we are: End the Silence: A Call to Action for Administrators, Faculty, Staff, and Students to Challenge Racism

DO YOU WANT TO BE ON THAT LIST? We are READY to confront racism on our campus and in our communities.

Now is the time to ACT; no more complaining from your couch, it’s time to build the courage to both look within ourselves to confront our racist upbringing and past and to take our newfound energy and use to build a new framework, one that is centered on humanity and love.

It’s a cathedral, not an Ikea armchair, and it doesn’t come with instructions. You’ll play a small, humble role in a huge movement that’s been ongoing for decades. And it will take courage. It will take broad shoulders and extra hours in your week. It will take a regular commitment, just like teaching or taking a class; this is real work.

At the bottom is a survey that asks you how you’d like to get involved. Please complete this survey and we will connect you with like others and facilitate the initiation of actions. PLEASE BE SURE TO COMMIT TO WHAT IS REALISTIC! We’re starting with the most popular initiatives and hope that folks will both LEARN and ACT because the time is NOW.

GUIDED DISCUSSION GROUP

Many people are interested in a guided discussion, so we’ll start with a webinar on “Language for Liberation” on June 25, 3-5 p.m., details to come. Please save the time! Interpreters available.

In addition, we are organizing two reading groups, one for folks starting out, one for folks who have been in the movement a bit and would like a deeper dive into US racist ideology. Sign-up below.

Group 1: White Fragility (DiAngelo) and Birth of a White Nation (Battalora)
Group 2: Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You (Kendi)
