We could have been watching UC Irvine’s return to the men’s tournament as Big West champion, after not only getting to the Dance a year ago but knocking off Kansas State to get to the second round. Or maybe it would have been a dark horse like CSUN, which was led by two-time Big West Player of the Year Lamine Diane and had won six of its last eight to move into the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament.
