Sustainability Updates | Learn More About Sustainability Efforts Throughout Campus

Zero Waste Plan

CSUN launched its Zero Waste Plan in 2019 to help drive the campus towards the ambitious waste reduction goals of both the State of California as well as the California State University System. The Zero Waste Plan outlines dozens of strategies that will push the campus to eliminate 95% of its landfill-bound waste, and addresses procurement, operations, policy and infrastructure. Check out this video and visit our Zero Waste website to learn more.

New Bins on the Block

Over 50% of the material CSUN sends to the landfill could be diverted through recycling or composting efforts. One of the major initiatives we have launched in alignment with the Zero Waste Plan is the deployment of new three-stream zero waste clusters, which have separate bins for landfill, recycling and food waste. These new clusters give every Matador the opportunity to place their waste into the proper receptacle. Learn more about what materials should be placed in which bins here.

CSUN Waste Facts - Did you know:

  • CSUN produces 4.25 lbs of trash each minute of every day, adding up to over 2.2 million lbs. of trash per year. How will you reduce your waste?
  • 55% of the material leaving campus is recycled, composted, donated or reused. This is referred to as a “Diversion Rate”, and it has the potential to be much higher with proper sorting by campus users.
  • Between 20%-30% of CSUN’s waste stream is food waste – lets come together and use the green bin to keep it out of the landfill!
