Zero Waste Initiative Update - Desk Side Bins
In an effort to meet the goals outlined by the State of California, the CSU Sustainability Policy and the university’s Zero Waste Plan, CSUN has made significant changes to the way waste is handled on campus. Since August, over 1,800 new waste bins have been deployed across campus buildings in sets of three. Each set contains a separate bin for:
- compostable waste such as food scraps
- recyclables like plastic, aluminum and paper, and
- landfill-bound items such as paper drink cups, Styrofoam, latex gloves and snack wrappers.
To reduce contamination between these three streams, CSUN has also modified the waste handling process for employee workstations. Employees who currently have desk side bins can choose to either remove their waste bins and use the centralized Zero Waste clusters, or leave their desk side bin as-is and self-service (sort and empty) their desk side waste bins themselves. In both cases, the employee will be responsible for depositing their waste into the new Zero Waste clusters located in central office locations. Through this program, users are encouraged to properly sort their waste as it is generated. When properly sorted, these materials are converted into valuable resources with uses in various end markets.
The new program is also expected to bring employees a little closer to items they throw away. Source separating waste materials causes the user to pause and think about where each item should go at its end-of-life, raising awareness of one’s own waste-generating habits and activities, and highlighting opportunities to reduce waste at an individual level.
