Student Assistant Summer Wrap-Up and Scheduling Reminder

Wrapping Up Summer Student Employment

As we prepare for the new semester, we would like to remind the campus of some important guidelines for processing student employee appointments, such as the inactivation of the 1874 Summer "Taxable Student Assistant" Job Code.

Reminders for Student Assistant Employment and Scheduling

Semester Breaks

When school is not in session due to semester breaks (outside of the academic semester), continuing Student Assistants may work up to a maximum of 40 hours per week, but may not be scheduled to work overtime.  Overtime is defined as more than 40 hours per work week (work week is defined as Sunday through Saturday, even when pay period ends in the middle of a week).  A schedule may exceed 8 hours a day provided the total for the work week does not exceed 40 hours. The Controller's Office will not issue payments to Student Assistants in excess of 168 hours for a 21-day period, nor in excess of 176 hours for a 22-day period.

Academic Semesters

During the Academic Semester (please see CSUN campus academic calendar), Student Assistants may work up to, but not in excess of, 20 hours per week total in all positions combined (NO EXCEPTIONS).  Please remember to coordinate with the student and the other department(s) where there are multiple appointments.

Split Weeks

When the academic semester starts, or ends, in the middle of a work week it is a “split” week.  The FIRST day of the Fall semester is Wednesday, August 21, 2019.

For those students NOT taking summer session courses, and who need to stay within the maximum hours of 20 hour per week through the end of the summer sessions (8/20/19):

  • Monday =   8 hours
  • Tuesday =   8 hours
  • Wednesday =  4 hours
  • Thursday =  4 hours
  • Friday =   4 hours

Total hours that can be worked in this “split” week scenario is 28 hours.

Minimum Wage Rate Reminder

CSUN State Employees follow the California State minimum wage guidelines.

  • Current minimum wage rate =  $12.00 per hour
  • Current Student Assistant salary range = $12.00 to $18.63 per hour
  • The next anticipated increase to the CA state minimum wage will be to $13.00 per hour on January 1, 2020.

Campus Auxiliaries (AS, TUC, USU) follow the Los Angeles City employers minimum wage guidelines.

  • Effective July 1, 2019, the minimum wage rate was increased to $14.25 per hour.
