Los Angeles Unified School District is the largest public school system in the state of California and the 2nd largest public school district in the United States. K-12 enrollment in 2018-19 was reported as 601,973 students and 21,524 enrolled in early education programs.
The District covers an area, totaling 710 square miles. This includes most of the city of Los Angeles, along with all or portions of 26 cities and unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. About 4.8 million people live within the District’s boundaries.
In all, 10 languages other than English are taught in Los Angeles Unified schools, according to the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department. The District has 157,619 students who are learning to speak English proficiently. Their primary languages are Spanish (92.5percent of English learners), Armenian (1.1 percent), Korean (1 percent) Tagalog, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Russian, each accounting for less than 1 percent of total. The District also has more than 7,000 foster care students.
