Tips for Transfer Students from our Peer Mentors

Academics:

  • Organize yourself by using a planer 
  • Research book prices before purchasing
  • Utilize the Lending Library and check out textbooks instead of purchasing
  • Don’t skip class, even if attendance isn’t mandatory
  • Buy school supplies at the beginning of the semester
  • Write everything down
  • Establish a study routine to allow for better scheduling
  • Always purchase books before classes start
  • Print out a calendar for each month and write homework and test dates down
  • Start studying for exams 3 weeks in advance
  • Do homework either the next day or two days after class, not the day before class
  • Read the textbook before the lecture 
  • Start on projects as soon as you are assigned
  • Sit in the front of class
  • Utilize your phone calendar/reminders/alarm to remind you of deadlines
  • Take good notes and KNOW your syllabus
  • Get to know your professors
  • Try your best to participate in class discussions
  • If you have free time, use it to get ahead in your studies

 

Technology:

  • Pay attention to student discounts on software, such as Adobe Cloud
  • Take advantage of CSUN’s many computer labs

 

Mental Health:

  • Make to-do lists
  • Budget your time wisely
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Be sure to stay on top of meals/snacks to fuel your brain
  • Set realistic goals
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions
  • Do not procrastinate

 

On Campus:

  • Join clubs
  • Visit Oasis Center
  • Take advantage of free printing (library, art computer lab, USU, etc.)
  • Know that parking fills up after 11am!
  • Utilize on campus resources, such as the Klotz Health Center
  • Always arrive to campus 20-30 minutes early to find parking easily and find a good seat in class
  • Get involved on campus
  • Get to know the campus, dining facilities and study areas
  • Use campus resources, especially the ones that come out of your tuition (SRC, Klotz SHC, Oasis, etc.)

 

Social:

  • Introduce yourself in class and exchange numbers with other students
  • Network with peers throughout the semester
  • Start using LinkedIn
  • Interact with classmates
  • Attend university events
  • Create study groups

 

Professional Development:

  • Seek out internships
  • Attend professional development workshops
