Greetings from Dean Webb

HHD Dean Farrell J. Webb Welcome to the start of a new semester! We want to share some of our students’ successes over the past year and let you know what’s coming up in spring, including opportunities for alumni, friends, and collaborators throughout campus to engage with the college.

Many of the courses our students begin this week will lead to formal presentations including our Environmental and Occupational Health Technology Symposium in February; guest lectures from community professionals at our Professor for a Day event in March, and, in April, the Family and Consumer Sciences’ TRENDS student fashion show and the Kinesiology Department’s Spring Dance Concert.

As we prepare to move forward, let’s take a look back on some of the highlights from 2017.

HHD Awarded $1 Million for Future Registered Dietitians

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded the college a four-year grant to support undergraduate and graduate students moving into careers as registered dietitians. The new educational pathway includes the skills needed to provide lactation support to new mothers.

Meet Our 2017 Christine H. Smith Dean's Circle Scholars

Meet two exceptional HHD students–our 2017 Dean’s Circle Scholars. Gabriel Bolivar is focused on helping Latino families in under-served areas to obtain healthcare and healthcare knowledge. Jeremy Mauritzen plans to become an advocate for education for children with disabilities.

Mentoring for Freshman/First-Year Students

We’re reaching out to freshman/first-year students to provide a solid foundation for their experience at CSUN. Organized vents include games, round-table discussions and nutrition tips as well as learning ways to support inclusiveness, keep studies on track, and meet mentors–both peer and faculty.

Supporting Emotional Recovery After Natural Disasters

Child and Adolescent Development faculty JoAnne Pandey has expertise in helping people recover from the long term effects of natural disasters. She and her students created a discussion and activity guide for teachers to help Nepalese children deal with long term effects of the devastating 2015 quakes in Nepal.

Gift Brings Stuttering Clinic to CSUN

Jerry Tyree, father of alum Larry Tyree (Engineering, ’81) made a planned gift to the Language Speech and Hearing Center in Communication Disorders and Sciences to establish a Stuttering Avoidance Reduction Group Therapy program at the center.

Clean Air in Classrooms--Right Beside the 405

Concern about air quality near freeways has a long-standing history, especially in the Los Angeles area, and yet, many of us live or work right beside them. Now a school 500 feet from the 405 has earned the Green Ribbon for clean air in classrooms. How? Meet Environmental and Occupational Health faculty Nola Kennedy and Rania Sabty-Daily.

Interior Design Students Win Awards at Industry Event

Six Family and Consumer Sciences students received the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) 2017 “Haunt Couture” award in the “animation” and “people’s choice” categories. “Being original was very important to us. That’s why we picked an animation topic where no costumes existed yet,” said Nicole Esper, one of the designers.

Research Fellow Gets Hospice Care Information to Non-English Speakers

Health Sciences faculty Stephan Kyusuk Chung is the 2017-18 CSUN Research Fellow from the College of Health and Human Development. He is devoting his fellowship year to helping non-English speaking families get the same information English-only speakers get when it comes to timely referrals to hospice care.

Hand-Cycling Clinics: Fitness for Veterans and Community

Valley GO! is a hand-cycling fitness activity program targeted to veterans with spinal injuries or other disabilities that affect balance. The Kinesiology Department’s Center of Achievement-based event is campus and community collaborative and open to all. Valley GO! provides hand cycling equipment and trainers’ expertise.

Nursing Students Gain Experience at Glendale Health Fair

The 8th Annual Glendale Health Festival was an opportunity for over 700 community members to get health screenings from a variety of professionals. CSUN Nursing faculty and students were there to help. Read about the event in the Glendale Health Festival Newsletter.

Campanella/Dodgers Scholarship Tradition Continues

This February 9th, 25 CSUN Doctor of Physical Therapy students will be awarded scholarships from the Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. Looking back at last year, we know this year’s celebration will be a home run!

Aquatic Center at Castaic: Water Safety, Fun, Community, Connection

Recreation and Tourism Management’s Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake served upwards of 3,500 youth over the summer of 2017 including water safety and boating experiences with the program Re/Connecting People with Parks to encourage the enjoyment and stewardship of nature, and at the Stansport Campout in conjunction with LAPD Devonshire PALS for at-risk youth.

The LimeBikes Are Here!

LimeBikes are a great way to get around campus. This isn’t our project, but we love these app-driven short term bike rentals! Some of our staff spent their lunch hour on a leisurely ride through the orange groves today! When it’s a little too far to walk, why drive when you can ride a bike? (Next stop: the bicycle helmet shop!)

Honors Convocation and Commencement

Honors Convocation is Saturday May 12, 6:00 p.m.
Commencements are May 21 and HHD has so many successful students it takes two ceremonies to congratulate them all! Get all the information you need at the CSUN Commencement site.

Spring Events

February: The Environmental and Occupational Health 13th Annual Technical Symposium, February 27, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The topic is Environmental Health Implications of Climate Change. More information.

March: HHD’s Professor for a Day is Wednesday, March 28. Interested in being a Professor for a Day? Contact Lauren Lafferty, HHD External Relations.

April: The FCS TRENDS Apparel Design and Merchandising students’ Spring Fashion Show is April 29. Details to come. AND Collaboratoria, Kinesiology’s Spring Dance Concert will be in April too. Info to come at HHD News and Events.
