Disaster Ready - Protecting Critical Documents and Valuables in Emergencies | April 5

Having your financial and medical records along with important  contact information is crucial to the disaster recovery process.  Participants will identify the documents needed to protect themselves and household members to include financial, medical, and legal documentation to work with insurance companies, care providers, and government disaster assistance programs.

Workplace Violence/Surviving an Active Shooter Incident - PART I | April 10

With the rise in occurrence and increased publicity of shootings on campuses and elsewhere around the country, at CSUN we have seen an increase in the number of faculty, staff and students who have raised concerns about their own safety and/or the safety of others.

Part I of this two-part workshop is designed to familiarize staff with the range of university resources available and how to activate those resources when responding to a variety of behaviors that may cause concern within your department.  A case study format will be utilized to provide discussion about the key elements necessary, when dealing with distressing, disruptive, and threatening behaviors.

Are you now or are you wanting to collect payments on the University’s behalf through your College, Department, Center or Institute?  Learn about new opportunities to process payments online through your own CSUN approved e-commerce Website and how to reduce and/or eliminate handling cash and cash equivalents.

This workshop will introduce the eMarket concept, provide instructions and workflow on eMarket set-up, explain the cost structure, and detail reporting and general ledger updating methods. Additionally, we’ll be investigating the need for mobile payment hardware with workshop attendees.

Communication Secrets for Success | April 12

CSUN Communication Studies Lecturer Bridget Sampson will share highlights from her popular book, Communication Secrets for Success.  After 25 years of teaching at CSUN, and her success as a consultant for clients such as Google, Bridget was moved to offer her most compelling lessons to the world.

Addressing a wide range of professional and personal communication contexts, Communication Secrets for Success provides something for everyone.  It’s chock-full of tips and strategies that can be immediately applied to build confidence, improve relationships, and increase joy and abundance.   

There is absolutely no obligation to buy or read the book.  Bridget is simply eager to share the lessons she’s most passionate about teaching with her CSUN family. Having earned her BA and MA at CSUN, this is where it all started for her and she is profoundly grateful to the many mentors and lifelong friends she has found here.  She will also talk briefly about the experience of writing and publishing a book for those who are interested in doing the same.

Matador Athletics Faculty and Staff Appreciation Series - Baseball vs Long Beach State | April 14

The Spring 2018 Faculty & Staff Series includes six home events on campus. For attending five of the six designated games, participants will receive a CSUN Under Armour Pull over or sweatshirt. CSUN Faculty and Staff members will receive complimentary admission to each game and are invited to bring up to three additional guests.

All CSUN Faculty and Staff members are eligible to participate by checking in at each game using their CSUN ID. The Athletics Department will have a separate check-in area for participants at each venue in order to track attendance. Premium giveaway items may also be made available for each game, as applicable, at the Faculty & Staff Series check-in table.

Workplace Violence/Surviving an Active Shooter Incident - PART II | April 17

With the rise in occurrence and increased publicity of shootings on campuses and elsewhere around the country, at CSUN we have seen an increase in the number of faculty, staff and students who have raised concerns about their own safety and/or the safety of others.

Part II of the workshop will deal with the worst case scenario of an active shooter situation on campus.  A dynamic video will be shown and discussion will follow to explain the survival mindset necessary in that situation as well as realistic strategies for dealing with it.  There will also be an explanation of what to expect regarding emergency response by CSUN Police.

Disaster Ready Kids! | April 19

Preparing for emergencies should not fall on your shoulders alone.  Young children and teens alike need to be part of the process — for their own safety and sense of empowerment.  Participants will learn to work together to build an emergency kit, sit down as a family to talk about your communications plan, role-play what you would do during a disaster, and hold fire drills in your house.

When Coaching and Counseling are Not Enough:Taking Corrective Action & Improving Performance - MPPs Only | April 23

This course is reserved for MPPs only. One of the most important responsibilities is the ability to provide comprehensive performance feedback through coaching and counseling. We will discuss how to best conduct an effective discussion when faced with performance concerns as well as ongoing coaching and support through consistent, honest feedback throughout the year to employees who need to improve their performance.  Unfortunately, there are those rare instances when the desired improvement does not occur.  This training will focus additionally on the difficult task of taking corrective action when appropriate to address performance concerns through the progressive discipline process as well as employee’s rights through the grievance system, the Skelly process, and the State Personnel Board appeal process.
