After high school, I continued with my education graduating from Gallaudet College, now a university, with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. I also received my master of arts degree in teaching from Augustana College, also now a university and another master of arts degree in administration and supervision from California State University-Northridge. The S.D. State Vocational Rehabilitation Service, provided some financial assistance during my college days at Gallaudet. Unfortunately, the SDVR was not willing to financially assist me, nor any other deaf individual, beyond receiving a B.A. degree. Sadly, this is still true today. Regardless, I returned to S.D. after becoming a gainfully employed taxpayer as a coach, teacher and administrator at SDSD. I have served as a board member on statewide Vocational Rehabilitation, Independent Living and S.D. Coalition of Citizens with Disabilities boards and have been a long-time member, volunteer and officer in various organizations serving deaf and hard of hearing people and also served as an evaluator for American Sign Language interpreters.
