a Richard W. Smith Lecture in Cultural Studies

Rachael Berstein Event PostcardJoin us for a very special evening as Rachel Bernstein, licensed marriage and family therapist, discusses the telltale characteristics, behaviors and warning signs that define cults of all varieties.

Cults are not just consigned to the religious sect; they can be from the political or self-help arenas and can also include multi-level marketing schemes. Some of the qualifications that define a cult include:

  • Deception
  • Inequality between the followers and the leader(s)
  • Obliteration of personal goals
  • Conformity

Rachel Bernstein, MS. Ed. LMFT, has been working with former cult members for 25 years. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Educator, who lives in Los Angeles. California. Rachel ran the Maynard Bernstein Resource Center on cults, named after her father. She was the Clinician at the former Cult Clinic in Los Angeles, as well as the Cult Hotline and Clinic in Manhattan. She now treats former cult members and the families and friends of those in cults in her private practice.
