Retired lawyer’s passion for Old West’s military history leads to book

A Probably as a kid — you go back to what kind of movies you liked. I liked Westerns, the cavalry and movies about cowboys and Indians. I think that’s where it started. When I got to college and was bored being stuck in the school library. I started pulling books off the shelves. Some of the books were inspiring to me. I had an amazing professor, (Beth) Lomax Hawes, she sang with Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger as a young woman. Her father was a folklorist. She taught at the anthropology department (at California State University Northridge). Anyway, I interested her in me writing a term paper about the music of the U.S. Army during the American Indian Wars. That kind of began the interest.
