What of note has Duke done since 1991? A story from 1996 is typical. A measure called the California Civil Rights initiative, banning racial preferences by the state, was on the November ballot. In September, as CCRI sponsor Ward Connerly wrote in a contemporaneous Wall Street Journal op-ed, anti-CCRI students at California State University, Northridge, organized “a ‘debate’ on affirmative action” with Duke “representing the anti-affirmative action side.” (Disclosure: This columnist has a history with one of the key figures in that controversy, which we recounted at length in a 2013 column.)
