She worked at NASA to pay her way through college, earning an associate's degree at Pasadena City College, a bachelor's degree at California State University Los Angeles, and a master's degree at California State University Northridge. She worked at the European Space Station for several years while obtaining her Ph.D at the University of Amsterdam.
