October 8, 2013

The deadline to apply for the 2014-2015 Cal State University International program is Nov. 30, 2013. CSUN students can sign up online for free information sessions, which will be held in the lobby of the International & Exchange Student Center at the USU, opposite the computer lab.

The CSU International Program offers eligible students the opportunity to study in one of 18 countries for a full academic year. Students can spend a year in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Japan Korea, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the UK. The CSU one-year study abroad programs in Australia and South Africa begin each February, all other programs commence for the fall semester.

CSUN Journalism professor, Dr. Jéssica Retis, has accepted a one-year appointment as resident director for the Cal State University International program in Madrid, Spain, for the 2014-15 school year. Retis is an assistant professor in the department and teaches several courses in the interdisciplinary minor in Spanish-language Journalism.

Retis came to CSUN in 2008 from Madrid where she taught journalism and communication courses at Universidad Carlos III.  A native of Peru, Retis has more than 20 years of professional experience in print and broadcast media in Lima, Mexico City and Madrid. Retis will administer the program for students coming from all 23 CSU campuses.

“Spending a year in Spain will provide a great opportunity for Cal. State students who are interested in learning or advancing their Spanish-language skills,” said Retis.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.75 to apply for most countries; Australia and the UK require a GPA of 3.0. Typically students are in their junior year when they study abroad. However, some of the programs are open to sophomores.
