University business constitutes driving in performance of, or necessary to, or in the course of the duties on university employment.
Students driving personal vehicles to and from university-sponsored activities, i.e., academic field trips
Authorization Overview:
To qualify to drive on university business an employee, volunteer or student must:
- Possess a valid state driver's license with the correct class for the type of vehicle they are driving
- Adequate auto insurance coverage
- Have and maintain a good and safe driving record
CSUN Employees
CSU Northridge employees in active, state-funded pay status, including student assistants, or appointed volunteers may be authorized to drive on university business. The campus may not authorize others to drive on university business, such as students, or any non-state employees including employees of the CSUN auxiliary organizations. Authorization is necessary for driving any university vehicle defined as a motorized device for land transportation, owned, leased, or rented by the university, state, or any state agency, including and not limited to automobiles, trucks, golf carts, tractors, etc.
Steps to Becoming Authorized to Drive on University Business
STEP ONE: Complete the Following mandatory training:
- Defensive Driving Program
- Additional required training for powered cart drivers: Power Cart Safety Training
STEP TWO: Fully Complete and Submit your application
- Fully complete the Authorization to Use Privately Owned Vehicles (STD 261) Form
- Fully complete the DMV Employer Pull Program Application
STEP THREE: Review & Comply with all guidelines. Safe Travels!
- The DMV will send an annual driving record update on each driver enrolled in the program to CSUN, and they will also notify the University of driving activity updates such as tickets, accidents and suspended licenses.

CSUN Students
Students may not drive university vehicles on university business unless they are employees or appointed volunteers. CSUN students who will be driving for any University-related activities (i.e., sporting events, field trips, and other events).
Personal vehicle liability insurance is primary coverage when an accident occurs.
Proof of vehicle insurance for the minimum amount prescribed by law must be VERIFIED by the supervising staff or faculty
