College of Humanities and Michael D. Eisner College of Education to Hold Joint Commencement Ceremonies

April 29, 2014

Commencement and Honors Convocation exercises are pinnacle moments for CSUN and our graduating students. They are also very complex events which, over the years, have undergone significant changes. Unfortunately, attendance at several of last year’s ceremonies substantially exceeded available seating and caused concerns about public safety and the university’s ability to properly host its guests. Changes have been made to this year’s ceremonies in order to address these concerns and to ensure that our students and their families will be able to celebrate and enjoy the commencement experience.

Our two Colleges will this year hold a joint Commencement Ceremony on the lawn in front of the Oviatt Library. In order to ensure adequate seating for all, guests of graduates will be required to possess a ticket in order to gain admittance to the Oviatt Library Lawn venue. Each graduate may request up to seven guest tickets. There will be additional overflow seating with large screen monitors where others may view the Commencement Ceremony. Additionally the Ceremony will be live-streamed and available online. The newly revised 2014 schedule is as follows.

We will continue the well-established tradition of having each graduate’s name read while she/he walks across the stage to receive a congratulatory handshake from the President and/or other university officials. Each graduate will be presented with a commemorative diploma cover and each graduate will be photographed by a professional photographer.

In order to ensure adequate campus parking, each graduate will be given two parking permits. These permits are at no cost to graduates and will be made available when graduates retrieve their Commencement tickets. Carpooling will be strongly encouraged.

While this will mark a change to the way Commencement has happened in recent years, we want to assure you that it will still be an event that showcases your accomplishments and that demonstrates again how CSUN Shines!
