Thursday, March 30, 2017 - 11:00am to 1:15pm
Location:Rembrandt, the great 17th century Dutch Calvinist artist, is famous for his portraits; but he also painted or etched many images of biblical stories. Do his scenes from the Hebrew Bible reveal a pattern of borrowing from sophisticated rabbinic interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash? If so, how did he obtain access to these esoteric sources? Jerry Rabow will consider the evidence by examining some prominent artworks by Rembrandt together with their related biblical texts and ancient and medieval commentaries.
Jerry Rabow has served for over 40 years in various lay leadership positions at Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue, Encino, including, together with his wife, Lola, helping to found and continuing to lead the Valley Beth Shalom-Hazak program of life-long education for seniors. Jerry has taught widely for many secular and religious educational organizations in New York City, Toronto, and throughout Southern California.
