IMPORTANT! Changes to Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) Signed into Law!
On June 9, 2021, Governor Newsom signed the Education Trailer Bill AB 130 (Chap. 44, Stats. 2021). One key provision adds a coursework option to the manner in which educator preparation candidates may demonstrate basic skills proficiency. This new provision allows Commission approved educator preparation programs to verify that a candidate has demonstrated basic skills proficiency by accepting qualifying college level coursework from a regionally accredited institution of higher education as long as certain conditions are met. Detailed information for meeting the BSR can be found on the following link Basic Skills Requirement (CL-667) (ca.gov)
For CSUN PROGRAMS
The Credential Office (CO) will continue to verify for BSR at the time of admission.
Currently Enrolled Students:
The Credential Office will be advising currently enrolled students, who have not met the BSR, of this new provision and will be evaluating their transcripts to determine if they have taken any of the qualifying coursework. If they have met the BSR through coursework, the student will receive credit as having met the BSR and be notified via email. Please do not contact the Credential Office--they will contact any student missing the Basic Skills Requirement (including the CBEST) in the next couple of weeks.
Prospective Students:
The CO website will be updated to reflect the additional options for meeting the BSR. Prospective students should check the Credential Office website for information on how to meet the BSR. https://www.csun.edu/eisner-education/credential-office
