Existential Concerns: A Comparative Study of Modern Science and Chinese Science

Presented by Prof. Wenyu Xie,  Professor of Philosophy, Shandong University, China and Professor of Historical Theology, China Evangelical Seminary, West Covina.

Fung Yu-lan had made a strong suggestion that Chinese philosophers did not want modern science. Professor Xie will attempt to provide a justification for this statement through an existential analysis of Chinese concept of nature, and demonstration of Chinese existential concerns prevailing in Daoism and Confucianism, which distaste for scientific study in the sense of modern science.  Read more

Rembrandt, the great 17th century Dutch Calvinist artist, is famous for his portraits; but he also painted or etched many images of biblical stories.   Do his scenes from the Hebrew Bible reveal a pattern of borrowing from sophisticated rabbinic interpretations in the Talmud and Midrash?  Jerry Rabow will consider the evidence by examining some prominent artworks by Rembrandt together with their related biblical texts and ancient and medieval commentaries.
